Mentoring in Medicine Conference - Making Mentoring Work

East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham.

Thank you to everyone who supported this years' event. We hope that all those who attended got something useful out of the day.

There was lots of feedback from the attendees with good suggestions which will be taken forward to make next year's event even more relevant to your needs. We are now working on the conference for next year and from suggestions the programme will address:

• The strategic context of mentoring
• Defining mentoring and its purpose
• Identifying the stakeholders and making it part of the culture
• Training for mentoring
• What is the core curriculum?
• How can it be delivered?
• Academic validation for benchmarking and quality assurance
• Multidisciplinary mentoring
• Joining together in our learning and understanding
• Mentoring Preceptorship and clinical supervision
• Similarity and diversity
• Standards and guidelines
• Exploration of the standards set by a mentoring professional body

With each of the platform speeches, there will be time for discussion in the cabaret style groups. The workshops for the day will be practical skills based in the morning and discussion groups in the afternoon.

At the end of the day there will be further opportunity for feedback and future planning. The topics that have emerged from feedback for workshop and discussion were as follows:

• Hands on skills development
• Complexity in mentoring
• Working with resistance
• Advanced skills of mentoring
• Setting up mentoring schemes
• Specific issues in mentoring
• Dealing with professionals in difficulty
• Evaluation of mentoring programmes
• Research and development

Do click on to our newly launched forum for exchange of ideas and suggestions. Although this is in its infancy at the moment we hope that it will gain momentum as the year progresses.
